POLYMERIC HYBRID NANOMATERIALS

Modern methods of polymer synthesis allow the construction of macromolecules with well-defined architectures and molecular masses. Controlled radical polymerization techniques have enabled the creation of multitudes of hybrid nanomaterials, which combine inorganic and organic components into novel functional entities.

Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and reversible addition-fragmentation polymerization (RAFT) offer a relatively easy way of combining inorganic nanoparticles and polymers. Two synthetic approaches include “grafting from” and “grafting to” techniques.

Specific properties of nano-sized materials will be discussed using gold as an example. In addition to this several materials based on metal, clay, and silica nanoparticles will be introduced and finally, novel thermoresponsive nanogels decorated with gold nanoparticles will be introduced.

 

GRAPHENE/POLYMER BASED PASSIVE MICROWAVE – THZ DEVICES

The ideas of using carbonaceous thin films (CVD graphene, pyrolytic carbon films, etc) separated by polymer slabs as the main working elements of passive radiofrequency devices, such as shields, filters and polarizers are proposed and proved experimentally [1-4]. Alternatively to graphene/polymer sandwiches, it is also possible to develop an easy to use, cheap, 3D printing process [5,6] for producing 3D structures of sophisticated geometries made from a graphene-polymer composites. The peculiarities of electromagnetic response of all these carbonaceous materials are investigated; the advantages of each type of carbon structures depending on particular application are emphasized.
